Do You Talk To Yourself Too?

As far back as I can remember, I used to talk to imaginary people. It started, I think, when I was playing with dolls. I mean, dolls just don’t sit there. You have tea parties with them. You take care of them. You drag them outside to play in the dirt. Nobody in their right mind would ever say that they never talked to their dolls. Right?
Well, that’s what I imagine. Perhaps it started there for me. Then, I was a quiet little girl. I was shy and didn’t always make friends that easily. We moved around a lot, which is nothing at all unusual for a military family. You go where you are told to go. Sometimes, the service member, my father, would go to places where we couldn’t go. For our family, that was Vietnam and Korea.
I recall being heartbroken about having to leave my friends as we traveled to a new duty station during the summer. But, as soon as we began to put down roots again, I’d make new friends. Sometimes. What it created for me was an inability to call someplace home. To this day, and as I quickly approach my 70th year, if someone asks me where I’m from, I say, “Nowhere and Everywhere.”
Even now, after having lived in the same place for the last 36 years, I can’t work up a hometown feeling. But that’s…
