I’ve heard it said that a writer’s first book is going to be autobiographical. What do you know best? Yourself. But this was also something that I tended to think was not good. I’m not sure why other than if you’re writing about yourself, you’re also going to be writing about close family members, your friends, and coworkers. Those people might not like it. And, so, I did not write. For many years.
I can remember just before I went off to college, my father looked me in the eye and said, “You will not talk about the family.” All I could say was okay. I really didn’t know what he was talking about—at least, not until I went into therapy in my 30s. He is my favorite thing to talk about when I’m feeling angry these days. Otherwise, I pretty much talk about everybody.
Of course, he is dead now and really doesn’t care. It was a couple of years after he had passed that we started talking again. Perhaps I need to explain myself. I’m a psychic and talk to dead people. I’m sure he understands why he acted like such a shit when he was alive. I hope it was worth it.
I believe that everything that happens to us makes us stronger and better human beings. Maybe if I say this often enough, it will become true for me.
