The Long Look … A Considering Glance

I wasn’t going to start another document. It’s early morning, I’ve just recently awakened, and the day has begun. Despite my resolution to keep my computer desktop clean when I go to bed at night, there were three open, partly worked up documents open on my desktop. Now, I’m starting another one, but I believe this is worth talking about.

It’s what I call the Long Look, or perhaps you might call it A Considering Glance. Personally, I don’t really know until a bit of time has passed if it’s just a long look or a psychic nudge.

Today, in preparing my first cup of coffee, which many days is my only cup of coffee, I gave the filter I planned on using a considering glance. Why?

It was mangled. It had been crushed and bent out of shape. The accordion pleats all around it were misshapen and, in many cases, gone. The paper was half flat. I thought to myself, “I can make this work.”

Usually, if a coffee filter is a little bit misshapen you can jam it into the coffee pot and push the sides straight. I do that a lot. Not every day, maybe once every couple of weeks.

It is a proven move. It works.
