To the Republic of Richard Stans

Tales from my husband Dennis

Do you remember what it was like to be a school kid?

My husband has many stories from when he was a kid in school and to this day, even after 46 years of marriage, I enjoy every one of them.

One was how he recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t know if kids say this anymore at the beginning of the school day, but when he was in school it was standard practice. The same went for me.

It has changed since it was first written in 1892 and I expect there will be further variations as time goes by. But this is the one that students recited when Dennis and I went to school.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Except for Dennis, for many years thought the words were “To the republic of Richard Stans”. He told me he never figured out who Richard Stans was.
