I know you are all familiar with this. I lost a couple months’ worth of data yesterday in an excel file I keep tracking my Medium statistics. What, pray tell is the Universe trying to tell me now?

Obviously, back up your stuff.

This morning, I backed up all of the stories I’ve written here at Medium onto my external hard disk drive. They weren’t there, so there are a bit more than 700 stories, most are noted in my Table of Contents, which I update every month here on Medium. There are also a bunch of stories scheduled to be published.

It was a total of 701 articles divided up into three Word documents. After a time, those documents can get so large they become unstable and I create new ones. Anyway, now they are safe. Since I am on a roll here, over the next week or so my plan is to back up other large or important documents to my external disk drive. I will also consider backing them up onto a thumb drive.

The other important thing was my reaction to this big error of lost information. I didn’t get upset. In the past I’ve had different reactions varying from total melt down in the office in front of my boss (which was embarrassing), to this most recent occurrence which only involved one file as far as I can tell of, “Oh, well. That happened.”

Is this a sign of spiritual growth or has my Wellbutrin well and truly kicked in?

Anyway, I thought to mention it. If you don’t know how to back up your stuff, please learn how to do it because I can guarantee that at some point, you are going to lose the most important files. Back up your documents, your books, your pictures—everything you can think of. You might well want it for something in the future.

Thanks for reading. Believe in magic, and I’ll see you next time.

Check out my Table of Contents for more stories.
