I think it can be a paralyzing thing to want to only put quality stuff out there as a writer. There was a time when I really believed that. That if I didn’t write the best I had in me, well, the rest of it just wasn’t worthy of consideration. Mine or anybody else’s. But I was wrong about that.

It also wasn’t something I decided on in one day. It took me years to come to the idea that somewhere in the rubble of my writing, there were a few diamonds. If they are there for somebody else or just for you, the writer, to riff off of, they are important.

See, writing is like any art. With time, you get better at it. There are so many things that can prop up that idea of you as a bad writer.

One is the support you might feel from the people around you. If you wait for your sister to exclaim what a great thing you wrote, you might be waiting for years. Maybe she just doesn’t like reading? Maybe she’s too busy with family and job to even want to tear herself away from her gardening to be interested in what you do. Hey, that’s okay. Besides, not everybody is going to read your stuff.
